Extreme Noise Rap
Clipping, based in Los Angeles, are an out of the ordinary hip-hop trio. Their music doesn’t possess beats, but it certainly possesses noise, a lot of noise. With references ranging from Death Grips to My Bloody Valentine, their first album, "Midcity" has earned rave reviews from British newspaper The Guardian ("an album with ‘OMG’ moments") and it is no wonder. Their music sounds as menacing as the world in which we live today. Part of Clipping’s electronic experimentalism is provided by Jonathan Snipes, formerly Captain Ahab, a sound designer and film and theatre soundtrack composer, specializing in electro acoustics and musique concrète. Also a member is William Hutson, a noise devotee in his own right who goes under the name of Rale, and is currently enrolled in a doctoral performance course at UCLA. The third member of the group is Daveed Diggs, front man and MC, rapid and precise, whose skills somehow create a seemingly phantom rhythm and melody, when in reality there are no rhythms or melodies of any kind.
