MØ
(Chess Club / DK)
Contemporary hybrid
The Nordic scene has a new star: Karen Marie Ørsted, better known the world over by the name MØ. In just one year, this sassy Danish artist has achieved considerable success with songs like "XXX 88" (with Diplo), "Do not Wanna Dance" or "Pilgrim", all of which are included on her debut album "No Mythologies To Follow" recently released and created with the help of Ronni Vindahl from the No Wav production team. MØ (who started rapping and recording songs before turning 20) cites Sonic Youth, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, J Dilla, Major Lazer, Santigold, Lykke Li and Twin Shadow, among her influences, and has been compared to Grimes or indeed Lykke Li, for her on stage charisma and the stylistic range of her music. Much like her peers, MØ blends elements of pop, trap, funk, electro, hip-hop and bass music in a fresh, contemporary hybrid.
