Pretty Lights

(Pretty Lights Music / US)

Known worldwide as Pretty Lights, Derek Vincent Smith is perhaps the most organic artist of the electronica explosion in the U.S., where he is an authentic heavyweight, with followers in their thousands. Pretty Lights music is based on sampling, combining hip-hop beats, glitches and samples of old funk and soul. "A Color Map of the Sun" (8 Minutes 20 Seconds Records, 2013), his fourth album, was nominated for best dance / electronica album at last year’s Grammy Awards. Interestingly this is his first long-form material, without the use of third party samples and composed entirely by himself. Smith met with several musicians at studios in Brooklyn, New Orleans and Denver in order to (re)create original sound sources from various music of the past century (contemporary, jazz, soul and rare grooves), paying particular attention to retaining the timbres and sonorities. After several sessions recording live musicians (where he played bass and keyboards) Smith then pressed straight to vinyl, sampling the parts that interested him. He then finished the piece off with modular synthesizers and digital production methods. The album includes a bonus disc; "Live Studio Sessions" which shows recorded footage from these sessions of 3-4 minute long breaks.
